The 21st August saw the start of the month of Elul, the 6th month in the Hebrew calendar. It is the month of preparation and introspection and known as the month of repentance and mercy.
Elul is the month when Moses ascended to Mount Sinai to receive the tablets of the covenant the second time and so we are called to remember the Mercy of God towards his people. The Phrase ‘The king is in the field’ (2 Sam 10:1) is one linked to this month as we draw near to him and how to explore the fresh way’s God wants to relate to us. Jews often refer to the month of Elul as the month the ‘eye of the needle’- it’s a time to give God the ‘eye of the needle’ in your life – make a place in your life that is wholly and truly his even if its a small thing so he can pour out his love and faithfulness.
Elul is the ‘point’ month – we need to know how something starts so we can get to the end of it, you may have come to a ‘point’ in your life where you recognise how you got into your situation and God has appointed this month to get out of the mess, to allow his spirit to renew and restore.
The month ends with the beginning of the new month, Tishri, and this is celebrated by the ‘Feast of Trumpets’ (Numbers 29:1).
